Baked Goodness by Jessica

A few of my past cakes

Posted by: Jessica Young on: June 19, 2010

The past year has really provided me with a lot of opportunity to try new things with cakes. I have been able to explore new techniques, new recipes and fun ideas. Below are a few of the cakes I’ve done recently.

This was my first attempt using fondant – homemade marshmallow fondant, nonetheless. It was for a wedding, note the “veil” on the horse. This was a really fun cake because it was decorated just like the horse owned by the bride. Really fun and very cool! This was at the beginning of my experimenting, around three years ago.

I did this cake in the fall of 2009. It is still – and I think always will be – one of my favorites. I love it when my vision comes to life. The figures were made by my very talented friend. I have since made her teach me all sorts of molding tricks. The whole cake was first iced with vanilla buttercream then covered with fondant, The figures were made from gum paste then painted with food coloring.

This was an interesting combination of Legos and Star Wars. Another fun cake that tested my skills. The cake was topped with oreo cookies before covering with fondant to create the pegs on top. This is always a big request among little boys.

Appropriately named Miss Lay D. Bug, this cake screamed personality. Again, all decorations are made with fondant. The cake inside was chocolate. This was for a ladybug enthusiast and it was a huge hit!

Sunflowers were the theme for this birthday party. The cake matched the invitation and sweet Baby Galiana matched with her outfit.

This transformers cake was for a little girl who absolutely loves bumble bee. The cake was designed to look like the front of the car with the transformers logo on top.

For the true Irishman – or toddler. This was a birthday cake for a little boy who belongs to one of the most Irish families I know. The dogs were boxers, modeled after their own.

Go Tigers! This was for the end of a basketball season.

Sweet Galiana’s baptism cake. The decoration was taken from her invitation. It was made with homemade marshmallow fondant.
